Tags expire at midnight on the last day of the given month. Heavy trucks (any truck with a gross weight of 16M or higher) & trailers are due by the last day of February. Documents required for Tag Renewal, Title Work, Moving to Kansas from another state Original Title & Registration Title: A properly filled out Kansas title (make sure to have the current mileage, even if it is exempt we have to know with the odometer reads) Out of state titles will need to be inspected by the Kansas Highway Patrol. They do that at the Kansas Department of Transportation, 1020 S Range Ave Colby, KS, Wednesdays only from 10:00am to 1:00pm. Bill of Sale: A bill of sale is needed if there is not a place on the back of the title for the purchase price, date of sale, or signature of both the seller and the buyer. Sales Tax Receipt: If the vehicle was purchased from a dealer in Kansas we need the sales tax receipt. This shows the purchase price of the vehicle, if there was a trade in, and how much sales tax was paid. If the vehicle was purchased from an individual or an out of state dealer, sales tax will be paid at the time of registration. Proof of Insurance: Pursuant to K.S.A 8-173 (d), as of January 1, 2000, anyone registering a new vehicle or renewing tags must provide verified proof of insurance before receiving a registration. Any other supporting Documents: For example affidavit to a fact, power of attorney, one in the same, etc. Transfer: This is the same process of an Original Title & Registration (See original Title & Registration) we just need your registration off the vehicle that you traded in or disposed of. In order to Transfer the tags of your old vehicle, the Title of the new vehicle must be made out like the Title of your old vehicle. 30 Day Temporary Tag: A 30 Day Tag can be purchased for $8, and you will need to bring in your title and proof of insurance.
